2012 Morobe Show & Highlands Explorer Tours

The Morobe Show Highlands Explorer tours includes 2 full days of Morobe Show in Lae and 9 days of explorer tours covering the Highlands regions and some parts of Morobe Province. The highlight of this tour includes meeting the renowned Huli Wigmen and and Asaro Mudmen and get up-close with their traditional way of life, rituals and subsistence economy.

11 nights brief itinerary overview: 18th to 29th Oct 2012 covering Tari, Mt Hagen, Kumul Lodge, Goroka and Lae (Morobe Culture Show). (Can be extended to Sepik for an additional 5 nights)

Day 1: Thurs 18th Oct 2012 - Port Moresby/Tari
Board flight PX864 to Tari at 08:30 and arrive in Tari at 10:00 and start tour of Tari Basin. Overnight at Hela Guesthouse. (D)

Day 2: Fri 19th - Tari Basin
Today fully immerse yourself in the Huli culture and its intriguing traditions. Overnight at Hela Guesthouse

Day 3: Sat 20th - Tari/Mt Hagen
Transfer by road to Mt Hagen. Drive time is 7 hours. En route see beautiful sceneries, tribal villages, roadside markets, authentic cultural encounters, etc. Overnight at Pakuwat Wilderness Lodge. (BLD)

Day 4: Sun 21st - Mt Hagen (Rugli Village)/Kumul Lodge
Visit Rugli village for a full village and cultural discovery of the Kumdi tribes people. In the Afternoon transfer to Kumul Lodge and overnight. (BLD)

Day 5: Mon 22nd - Kumul Lodge
Full day birding and wildlife discovery tours at Kumul Lodge. Overnight at Kumul Lodge. (BLD)

Day 6: Tues 23rd - Mt Hagen/Simbu/Goroka
Transfer to Goroka via Highlands Highway. En route stop at Suave and meet the Emerian people for village and cultural tours. Continue to Goroka and overnight at Red Riverside Lodge. (BD)

Day 7: Wed 24th - Goroka/Asaro Valley
Today visit the Asaro Valley first part of the day to see the legendary Asaro Mud men. Second part of the day see more of Goroka and its surroundings. Overnight at Red Riverside Lodge. (BD)

Day 8: Thurs 25th - Goroka/Lae
Transfer to Lae by road on the Highlands Highway. En route see Yonki Dam, Ramu Valley, Markham Valley and roadside villages and markets. Afternoon tour Rainforest Habitat for wildlife discovery, markets and WW2 relics. Overnight at Phills Motel. (BLD)

Day 9: Fri 26th - Lae (Gabensis)
First part of today visit Gabensis area for village discovery tours. After lunch visit Botanical Gardens and crocodile farm. Overnight at Phills Motel. (BLD)

Day 10, 11: Sat 27th, Sun 28th Oct -Lae/Morobe Show Ground
These two days attend the Morobe show festivals. The first day will showcase commercial and agricultural products of PNG. The second day is the parading of over 70 cultural groups throughout PNG. Overnight at Phills Motel. (BLD)

Day 12:  Mon 29th Oct - Lae/Port Moresby
Board flight PX101 to Port Moresby. The flight departs at 07:35 and arrives in Port Moresby at 08:20. END OF PROGRAM or for EXTENSION to Sepik River see below.

EXTENDED PROGRAM

Sepik River Explorer
In this extended program you will be canoeing on motorized dingy on the mighty Sepik River emerging yourself into the mystical culture of the Sepik people and explore some of the raw ecological beauty along the river's natural habitat. You will come to learn the fascinating culture of the river people with their rituals, initiation ceremonies, crafts, and the daily lifestyles that is demarcated by the river itself.

5 nights itinerary from29th Oct to 03rd Nov 2012: Lae, Wewak, Sepik and Port Moresby.

Day 12:  Mon 29th - Lae/Port Moresby/Wewak
Transfer to the airport and board flight PX101 to Port Moresby and get connection flight PX126 at 15:35 to Wewak. Overnight at Wewak Surfside Lodge. (D)

Day 13:  Tues  30th - Wewak/Kanganamun
Transferred to Pagwi for your canoe expedition. Visit the oldest Haus Tambaran along the Sepik River and overnight at Kanganamun Guest House. (LD)

Day 14: Wed 31st - Kanganamun/Palambe/Kamanabit
Transfer to Palambe by motorize canoe and hike inland for about 30 minutes and exploring the Palembe villages and visit the Haus Tambarans. Overnight Kamanabit village guest house. (BLD)

Day 15: Thurs 01st Nov- Kamanabit/Chambri Lakes
Continue journey into Chambri Lake by motorized canoe and see potteries of all sizes, shapes, colors and patterns. Overnight at Kamanabit village house. (BLD)

Day 16: Fri 02nd - Kamanabit/Wewak
Bid farewell to your friendly hosts at Kamanabit village and transfer to Pagwi and onto Wewak. Overnight at Wewak Surfside Lodge. (BLD)

Day17: Sat 03rd- Wewak/Port Moresby
Transfer to the airport and board flight PX 125 at 06:00 to Port Moresby for your next destination.  END OF PROGRAM.
